Volt is an arcade game developed and published by Quantized Bit studio for Android devices at a price of $1.99. Since the advent of touch mobile devices, many successful puzzle games have been created, mainly due to the perfect match between puzzles and touch controls. If you ask an average gamer today which game they prefer on their mobile device, you will usually hear the name of a puzzle game, such as Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds, or Cut The Rope. However, puzzle platformer games have not shone as much because, typically, the puzzle part is well designed but the platformer part is not as well executed. Volt attempts to solve this problem by offering a level-based structure where players control a battery that cannot do much by itself except move around, but it can stick to different surfaces using electric beams. Simply put, it’s like a combination of Cut The Rope and Bionic Commando. Volt is trapped in a recycling factory and wants to escape. By tapping on Volt, you can move it, but this is ineffective without momentum because the main movement comes from electric beams that shoot out and stick to surfaces. In each move, you can activate two electric beams by touching accessible surfaces and can cut them off anytime by swiping. Due to Volt’s battery nature, the use of electric beams is limited, and once depleted, you must recharge Volt. Therefore, if you move without planning, you will have to restart the level you are on.
The main goal in each of the 60 levels of Volt is to get from the start point to the end point and bring Volt one step closer to escaping the recycling factory. Each level contains many traps, obstacles, and dangers that will challenge your skills. Volt can take a few hits before restarting the level, but the game emphasizes momentum, and if you stay where you got hit, you will likely take more hits and have to restart the level. This makes the game’s levels very difficult and challenging, but definitely manageable and an engaging experience. After passing several levels, you will face a boss fight with slightly different mechanics. Visually, the game has a unique and distinct style. The main character is charming and well designed, but overall, a dark color theme is used, and the mechanical and strange sound effects create an eerie atmosphere. Content-wise, the levels are diverse and rich, with many locked items such as new characters and 16-bit stages that you can unlock as you progress.
