Boet Fighter – Bully Fighter is an action game developed by Califourways studio for Android devices. Initially, critics thought this game was just an advertisement with no real content, but this 2D side-scrolling platformer surprised everyone with its amazing theme reminiscent of classic games like Golden Axe and Street Fighter. It was even featured at Comic Con Africa. The storyline puts you in the role of Hard Eddy, a tough and strong bully who loved a girl who mysteriously disappeared. Now you must complete quests and pass various stages to find your beloved girl, fighting all enemies along the way and beating them up as much as possible. The entire gameplay can be summarized in these few lines, with no other special tasks. However, this simplicity works in favor of Boet Fighter, allowing Hard Eddy to adventure in the funniest locations such as busy intersections, gyms, nightclubs, rugby stadiums, and even an MMA cage! Each part of the game features a South African theme that is well-executed and very appealing.
Although choosing this theme could have been a disaster that would have driven gamers away from Boet Fighter, this boldness combined with stunning graphics and cartoonish, caricature-style art design has made this game stand out with a unique style. Of course, if the gameplay were terrible, all these features would be meaningless. Fortunately, the developers have done well in this area too. The game’s difficulty level is balanced—not too easy to breeze through, nor too hard to be frustrating. Enemy waves come at you at a good pace and volume, and boss fights are challenging, not a casual stroll in the park. There are also special support forces you can collect to boost your powers, but gathering them is a challenge since they are placed in hard-to-reach areas. Regarding controls, there is nothing particularly special to mention; all actions include punching, kicking, blocking, running, and special moves that you will get to know throughout the game. The limited number of actions might discourage some gamers, but after all, this is a mobile game and expectations should be reasonable. The most important feature and strength of this game lie in its sound design, which makes the game exciting and entertaining. The sarcasm and jokes are perfectly timed and very enjoyable, though some knowledge of English is helpful to understand them. Overall, this game hasn’t revolutionized the mobile gaming industry but definitely has unique attractions and is highly addictive.
