Her Story is a new and beautifully crafted adventure and video game by the game studio Sam Barlow for Android devices, released recently at a price of $2.99 on the major Google Play Store. The story of this game takes place in 1994; when Hannah Smith, the main character, reports her husband missing to the police! After some time, for unknown reasons, her husband is found murdered, which leads the police to interrogate her at specific intervals! The game places the player in front of short interrogation videos of Hannah to uncover the truth behind the case! The gameplay of Her Story unfolds on the screen of an old computer, where the player, as a guest user, can search through files to find and review various videos related to Hannah! The game files are not provided in a predetermined order; instead, by searching keywords (words Hannah used during interrogations), players can access new and more videos!

The video archive contains about 270 clips, each very short and lasting up to 1 minute. The game starts by providing the keyword “Murder” and the rest is up to you. Searching for “Murder” yields 5 video files to begin with! Since the search system is entirely based on words spoken by Hannah, the found files may correspond to interrogations on different days and may not be related. Players must use Hannah’s words to find new keywords and uncover more files! Because some keywords appear in many files, the game limits video display per keyword to 5, encouraging players to search for more specific terms over time. Interestingly, you don’t have to stick to exact keywords from previous videos; guessing or typing phrases you think Hannah might have said (like “Yes, I was there”) can also advance your progress! Naturally, as you advance, guessing becomes less useful and focusing on the topics discussed becomes more important. Other features simplify the player’s task; for example, videos you have watched are tagged to indicate that, and you can create a separate archive of important videos and assign your own keywords to them for easier future searches! The initially chaotic nature of the game may seem difficult and illogical, but once inside, everything becomes logical, showcasing the creator’s amazing artistry. Each player’s search experience can differ, making the story unfold uniquely for everyone.

Throughout Her Story, Hannah narrates two parts of her life: childhood and youth, each connected in some way. Some childhood events relate directly to her youth, while others are included to complete the story. The appeal of Her Story lies in constantly providing vague information, leaving the arrangement entirely up to you. Sometimes you may find videos seemingly unrelated to the main story, or hear Hannah say things contradicting your knowledge or her previous statements. This is exactly the creator’s intention and a successful one. The game forces players to judge an event they know nothing about, which can be frustrating. The disorganized information often leads to mistakes. You might get angry at Hannah or feel sympathy for her. Sometimes you try to read her face to tell if she’s lying or telling the truth! The major difference between Her Story and other games is that it doesn’t try to make you a skilled detective but rather gives you a feeling of cleverness — the ability to follow clues to a reasonable conclusion. This feeling keeps players engaged even when frustrated or tired. During the not-so-long gameplay, you may often feel lost about what to search for, but the gripping story makes it hard to stop playing. The gameplay itself isn’t as hard as it seems; you just need to get the hang of it.
For convenience, the game includes a database system showing how many interrogation videos you have watched, helping you track your progress. Watching just over half the videos nearly completes the game, allowing you to finish satisfied. But if you’re adventurous, you can keep searching for more keywords and videos to piece the puzzle together further. The gameplay lasts about 2 hours, but finding all videos can take 6 to 8 hours. Most of the time spent searching for the full truth is in the final stages finding the last remaining videos. Although finding the last videos requires patience and effort, it’s worth it, and finishing the game will make you proud! While many consider VCR or “interactive film” games not true games, Her Story undeniably is a game with much to offer. Previous titles may have failed to distinguish cinematic storytelling from interactive entertainment, but Sam Barlow expertly blends film and game elements. Her Story may not fit the traditional definition of a “game,” but its perfect combination of gameplay and cinematic narrative creates a masterpiece that leaves no room for criticism from VCR game skeptics. Her Story can certainly engage any gamer for at least a short time!
